What is SOMERI?
SOMERI – Social Media Research Institute is a network for scholars, public service and business experts, and other interested actors in the field of social media and digital research. SOMERI provides a forum for exchanges and cooperation for social media professionals, in both, academia and business.
The latest and fourth SOMERI event, “Social media in Academia and Business Networking Seminar”, was held on December 9, 2016.
How it all began with SOMERI
The multidisciplinary research group (FERG) specialized in the communicative power of Facebook from the Department of Communication and the Department of History and Ethnology organized the first social media research networking seminar “Social media as a research challenge” on May 21, 2013. The seminar programme and presentation slides can be found on the Seminar 21.5.2013 page. The second networking seminar was organized on August 26, 2013 with the theme “Developing multidisciplinary social media research projects”. The third SOMERI event, Social Media Research Symposium “Successes and failures in studying social media: issues of methods and ethics”, was organized on November 20, 2015. The symposium attracted around 50 researchers from various fields connected to quantitative and qualitative social media research, especially surrounding the theme focus on methods (experiences and innovations) and ethics of social media research. Why is SOMERI important?
Currently, there is too little cooperation between businesses and researchers in the field of social media. Utilizing social media research in business scenarios would provide companies with more innovative services and solutions to meet their business partners’ and customers’ needs. And, with the help of right tools researchers would be able to produce even better research in the future. Therefore, the aims of the SOMERI program are both mutually beneficial to both businesses and researchers on a global scale.
Where is SOMERI heading?
SOMERI network unites social media scholars around Finland and Nordic countries, and connects with actors focusing on social media issues in academic and business field. The aim of the network is to share research knowledge and innovations, create contacts and produce co-projects. Future goal for SOMERI is go global – unite actors and scholars all around the world!
